How to Define Success

Updated: Jan 7, 2019

According to the dictionary, the meaning of success is “the attainment of popularity or profit.” If that is true there are a lot of miserable successful people out there.

What does 'SUCCESS' look like to you?

‘The Greatest Showman’ is such a great example of chasing success. <SPOILER ALERT> In the movie, he exhausts everything in efforts of attaining the success he thought would bring him the highest level of happiness.

In reality, he nearly loses his family, friends and home trying to satisfy his own insecurities.

Here’s 5 ways you can define success and truly win!

BEGIN WITH THE END

Sometimes in life you happen upon success. Like when you happen to win the mega lottery or you find an extra diaper after your child detonates a bomb in the last one. If you are truly aiming to arrive in the land of success, you’ll need to know exactly what it looks like and have a map 🗺 to get there.

Take out a sheet of paper and write down the the next five years. (2019-2024) What does it look like? What does your business/company look like? Write it all down.

How are you going to get there?

DETERMINE YOUR STRATEGY

This is like the google maps for your plan. A strategic plan also helps business leaders determine where to spend time, human capital, and money.

Make a clear path to where you’re headed. Start with where you are now. Focus on what is important and essential. The best steps to more is less. Identify who will take the lead on the tasks. You may need to check and review your plan along the way but never the goal.

BOUNDARIES (Negotiables & Non-negotiables)

Decisions. Decisions. Decisions. There will always be choices to be made. Decide in the beginning what you’re willing to negotiate and what will be non-negotiable. This actually applies to every area of your life. 👍🏽

CHECK & FIX YOURSELF

Remain honest, humble and all heart.

There’s a reason we all learned this importance of telling the truth and being honest while we were young. It’s a foundation that you’ll need more and more as you get older. Choose to be the person you want your child to be. Honest and honorable.

Remain humble. There’s nothing more repulsive than arrogance. I grew up at Jimmy Swaggart’s church. I’ve never known anyone who knew the Bible quite like him. Often he would say, “the more I read about the Bible...the more I realize how little I know.”

No matter how high we get, there is ALWAYS room to learn more.

Ask yourself a tough question...

Is what you’re doing benefitting anyone besides me? Serving others is the highest honor.

“Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” Albert Einstein

TAKE ACTION

Less talking...more walking...”

GO DO IT! The end.
